Learn how to care for your high-risk pregnancy

These days, as our population changes, high-risk births are more common than ever. Numerous pre-existing factors and problems that have arisen in a past or present pregnancy may contribute to high-risk births, including high blood pressure, diabetes, fetal growth problems. being overweight, and older age. If you are concerned about your wellbeing and that of your baby’s, speak to us for peace of mind and understanding of your situation.

Could you have a high-risk pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy is categorised as having health problems that have arisen during your pregnancy journey or having pre-existing conditions. These pre-existing conditions are labelled as any concern that affects your health and your baby’s health.

Age also plays a part in being categorised as a high-risk pregnancy. For example, if you are under age 17 or over age 35, you may face more complications than the average birth. Other factors include:

  • You are pregnant with twins or triplets
  • You have health conditions, which increase your chances of pregnancy complications
  • You have a history of miscarriage, preterm labour, pre-eclampsia or ceasarian delivery
  • You show signs in your current pregnancy of medical or obstetric conditions

Caring for your multiple pregnancy

All expectant mamas need to eat well, get enough sleep, and visit their obstetrician for regular prenatal care. This is especially important when it comes to multiple pregnancies.

It’s also important to find a high risk obstetrician with experience with multiple pregnancies, deliveries and births. For almost 20 years I have been specialising in managing multiple pregnancies - twins, triplets and more.  I can advise you of the specific issues related to the type of twins you have, and discuss detailed management plans to ensure you and your babies are in the best possible position to have a healthy multiple pregnancy outcome.Contact Dr Stephen Cole for your obstetrician appointment near Kew

These days, multiple births are more common than ever. Numerous factors contribute to multiple births, including family history on a woman’s side, race, number of prior pregnancies, age of the mother, and whether infertility treatments were used. As women increasingly delay childbearing until later in life and infertility treatments become more widely used, the last two factors, in particular, have been on the rise and probably contribute to the increase in multiple pregnancies.

There are a few different types of multiples. The first is monozygotic (identical) twins. Identical twins are the result when a single fertilised egg splits into two separate halves and develops into two separate (genetically identical) babies. Dizygotic (fraternal) twins occur when two separate eggs are fertilised by two separate sperm. These twins are usually no more alike than any other siblings. Fraternal twins are much more common. Finally, multiple pregnancies sometimes mean more than two babies – triplets, quadruplets, and more are possible. These babies can be fraternal, identical, or a combination of both.

Caring for Your Multiple Pregnancy

All expectant mothers need to eat well, get enough sleep, and visit their obstetrician for regular prenatal care. Keeping each prenatal appointment that you make is especially important when it comes to multiple pregnancies. And it’s important to find a high risk obstetrician in the Kew area or elsewhere in Melbourne who has experience with multiple pregnancies and births. Because multiple pregnancies are considered high risk, you’ll want to have the best possible care available to you throughout your pregnancy and delivery. When you make an appointment with your obstetrician for an ultrasound near Kew, or other prenatal tests or check-ups, you’ll learn valuable information about your baby, your health, and what you can do to ensure you and your baby are as healthy as you can be.

Good nutrition is essential to a healthy multiple pregnancy. Follow your doctor’s advice on what you should be eating as well as any prenatal vitamins he or she recommends. Be sure to consume enough folic acid, calcium, protein, and iron, as well as other nutrients. And keep in mind that each additional fetus increases your need for all nutrients. However, you should be careful not to gain too much weight – although multiple pregnancies naturally result in more weight gain than singles. Speak with your obstetrician about the nutrition and weight guidelines that are right for you.
