Understanding Swelling of Limbs During Pregnancy

Swelling of the feet, ankles, and hands (oedema) is a common occurrence during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester. This condition is due to increased fluid retention and pressure from the growing uterus on blood vessels, which can slow down circulation.

While mild swelling is generally harmless, it can be managed with a few simple strategies: • Elevate your legs when sitting or resting. • Stay well-hydrated to help reduce fluid retention. • Wear loose, comfortable footwear to accommodate any swelling. • Avoid prolonged standing to prevent further discomfort.

However, if you experience sudden or excessive swelling, especially in the face or hands, it may be a sign of a more serious condition, such as preeclampsia. In such cases, we strongly recommend seeking immediate medical advice.
